More than a skilled professional, Kurt was a mentor, a steady presence, and a friend to many who had the privilege of working alongside him.
Kurt Smith was known throughout the newsroom as a master of his craft. His technical expertise behind the camera and in the control room was matched only by his ability to teach and guide others. Many photographers and editors were drawn to the station because of him, knowing they would not only learn the trade but also be supported by someone who genuinely cared about their growth. His leadership style was defined by patience, clarity, and kindness—qualities that made him both respected and deeply appreciated.
In the fast-paced and often unpredictable world of live television, Kurt was the calm in the storm. When broadcasts faced technical challenges or last-minute changes, his voice in the IFB was a source of reassurance.
